What happens at end of standard support
- No Extended Support for minors. AWS states that RDS Extended Support isn't available for minor versions, so there is no paid option to stay on 8.4.5, 8.4.6 or 8.4.7.
- Automatic upgrade. Per the Amazon RDS FAQs, instances still running a deprecated minor version are scheduled for automatic upgrade to the latest supported minor version during their maintenance window.
- This is a minor upgrade within 8.4, not a major upgrade. Upgrading yourself first lets you pick the time and test.
Find affected instances
aws rds describe-db-instances \ --query "DBInstances[?Engine=='mysql' && starts_with(EngineVersion,'8.4.')].[DBInstanceIdentifier,EngineVersion,AutoMinorVersionUpgrade]" \ --output table
Run per Region. Anything showing 8.4.5, 8.4.6 or 8.4.7 is affected. Paste versions into the checker.
Upgrade now
aws rds modify-db-instance \ --db-instance-identifier my-db \ --engine-version 8.4.11 \ --apply-immediately
- Target 8.4.11, the newest minor AWS lists (standard support to Aug 21, 2027), so you don't repeat this next month.
- Drop
--apply-immediatelyto apply in the next maintenance window instead. - With automatic minor version upgrade enabled, AWS says the instance is upgraded to new minor versions during the maintenance window as RDS supports them.
- Test on an instance restored from a snapshot first.
