OpenSearch extended support fees from Nov 7, 2026
From Nov 7, 2026, Amazon OpenSearch Service charges an extended-support fee equal to your instance price, roughly doubling instance cost, for OpenSearch 1.0–1.2 and 2.3–2.9 and Elasticsearch 1.5, 2.3, 5.1–5.5, 6.0–6.7 and 7.1–7.8. Storage isn't affected. Other versions use the standard rate of $0.0065 per Normalized Instance Hour.

Why the jump: AWS says that when a version's originally published end of extended support has passed and AWS extends it again, the fee becomes equal to your instance cost. Version pages: OpenSearch 1.0, OpenSearch 1.1, OpenSearch 1.2, OpenSearch 2.3, OpenSearch 2.5, OpenSearch 2.7, OpenSearch 2.9, Elasticsearch 1.5, Elasticsearch 2.3, Elasticsearch 5.1, Elasticsearch 5.3, Elasticsearch 5.5, Elasticsearch 6.0, Elasticsearch 6.2, Elasticsearch 6.3, Elasticsearch 6.4, Elasticsearch 6.5, Elasticsearch 6.7, Elasticsearch 7.1, Elasticsearch 7.4, Elasticsearch 7.7, Elasticsearch 7.8.
Cost example
AWS's own example: an m7g.medium.search instance at $0.068/hr on demand in US East (N. Virginia).
| Per day (AWS example) | Per month, 730 h (our math) | |
|---|---|---|
| Instance cost | $1.632 | $49.64 |
| Extended support on OpenSearch 1.0–1.2 / 2.3–2.9 etc. (from Nov 7, 2026) | +$1.632 | +$49.64 |
| Extended support at $0.0065/NIH (medium = factor 2) | +$0.312 | +$9.49 |
A 3-node domain of that size on OpenSearch 2.9 would pay about +$148.92/month extra from Nov 7, 2026. Normalization factors: small 1, medium 2, large 4, xlarge 8, 2xlarge 16 (more in the AWS docs). Other Regions have different NIH rates; see pricing.
Check which versions your domains run
Console: OpenSearch Service → Domains; the Version column shows the engine version. CLI (per Region):
aws opensearch list-domain-names --query "DomainNames[].DomainName" --output text aws opensearch describe-domains --domain-names my-domain \ --query "DomainStatusList[].[DomainName,EngineVersion]" --output table
EngineVersion looks like OpenSearch_2.9 or Elasticsearch_7.8. You can paste versions into the checker.
Upgrade paths
From AWS's supported in-place upgrade paths:
- OpenSearch 1.3 or 2.x → a later OpenSearch 2.x.
- OpenSearch 1.3 or 2.x → 3.x: you must first upgrade to 2.19. Indexes created in OpenSearch 1.3, Elasticsearch 7.10 or earlier must be reindexed before 3.x.
- OpenSearch 1.x → a later 1.x (1.0–1.2 → 1.3, then on to 2.x).
- Elasticsearch 7.x → a later 7.x or OpenSearch 1.x. Elasticsearch 6.8 → 7.x or OpenSearch 1.x.
- Elasticsearch 6.x → a later 6.x (then 6.8 → 7.x). Elasticsearch 5.6 → 6.x. Elasticsearch 5.x → a later 5.x.
- Elasticsearch 1.5 and 2.3 are not listed in AWS's in-place upgrade paths.

FAQ
Which OpenSearch versions pay 100% of instance price from Nov 7, 2026?
OpenSearch 1.0–1.2 and 2.3–2.9, and Elasticsearch 1.5, 2.3, 5.1–5.5, 6.0–6.7 and 7.1–7.8, from Nov 7, 2026 through Nov 7, 2027, per AWS pricing. Storage costs are not affected.
What is the standard OpenSearch extended support rate?
$0.0065 per Normalized Instance Hour in US East (N. Virginia), on top of the instance cost. A medium instance has a normalization factor of 2.
When does OpenSearch 2.11–2.19 leave standard support?
Nov 7, 2027. Extended support then runs until Nov 7, 2028 for 2.11–2.17 and Nov 7, 2030 for 2.19.
How do I stop the charges?
Upgrade the domain to a version still in standard support. From 1.3 or 2.x you must reach 2.19 before moving to 3.x.
