Billed per vCPU-hour on top of your normal instance cost, and it varies by Region. AWS's own example rate (US East, Ohio): $0.100 per vCPU-hour in years 1–2 and $0.200 in year 3.
| Instance | Mar 2027–Feb 2029 (our math, 730 h) | From Mar 2029 |
|---|---|---|
| 2 vCPU | +$146/mo | +$292/mo |
| 4 vCPU | +$292/mo | +$584/mo |
| 8 vCPU | +$584/mo | +$1,168/mo |
| 16 vCPU | +$1,168/mo | +$2,336/mo |
- Multi-AZ: charged on the primary and every standby.
- Read replicas on 14 are charged too.
- Reserved Instance discounts don't apply to Extended Support.
- Snapshots aren't charged, but restoring a 14 snapshot after Feb 28, 2027 creates an instance that is.
Instances are enrolled in Extended Support automatically unless you opted out at create or restore time. More: RDS extended support pricing.
Find your PostgreSQL 14 instances
aws rds describe-db-instances \ --query "DBInstances[?Engine=='postgres' && starts_with(EngineVersion,'14.')].[DBInstanceIdentifier,EngineVersion]" \ --output table aws rds describe-db-engine-versions --engine postgres --engine-version 14.24 \ --query "DBEngineVersions[*].ValidUpgradeTarget[*].EngineVersion" --output text
Run per Region; the second command lists valid upgrade targets for your exact version.
Where to upgrade
- PostgreSQL 15: standard support to Feb 29, 2028.
- PostgreSQL 16: to Feb 28, 2029.
- PostgreSQL 17: to Feb 28, 2030.
- PostgreSQL 18: to Feb 28, 2031.
AWS says you must perform major version upgrades yourself, by modifying the instance. In-Region read replicas are upgraded along with the primary. Test on a restored snapshot first and consider RDS Blue/Green Deployments to cut downtime. Check that your extensions are supported on the target version.
